Breakfast Oats and/or Green Smoothie

Breakfast Oats

Ingredients: 

1 cup unsweetened Soy* or Almond milk 

½ cup Rolled oats 

2 tbsp ground flax 

1 cup Berries (or other fruit)

Cinnamon

Directions:
Cook oatmeal according to package using Soy* or Almond milk as your base. While cooking, add cinnamon if desired. Mix in 2 tbsp of ground flax if you have not already done so in your smoothie. Spice up your oatmeal using whatever fruit you’d like (I prefer berries).

Optional: Add 1 tbsp of peanut butter to really jazz it up.

 

Green Smoothie

This smoothie recipe is very flexible and should be adjusted according to your taste buds! 

Ingredients:

½ cup unsweetened Soy* OR almond milk (Soy milk contains phytoestrogens which have been shown to lower the risk of breast and prostate cancer)

½ cup Naked (green or blue) 

1 handful of greens (mixed greens, kale**, etc.)

1 mandarin orange (26% of your DV of vitamin C)

1 stalk of celery (may help lower blood pressure in those with hypertension)

5 baby carrots (Beta-carotene - promotes eye health)

1-2 cups of frozen fruit (berries are ideal- very high in antioxidants)

2 tbsp ground flax (may help lower blood pressure in those with hypertension)

2 shakes turmeric (anti-inflammatory and antioxidants)

1 crack of black pepper (Helps the uptake of the active ingredient in Turmeric)

Directions: 

  1. Put ½ cup of Soy*/Almond milk and ½ cup of Naked into your blender. Put 1 handful of mixed greens and 5 baby carrots in as well. Blend very well (until all chunks of leaf are gone)
  2. Put fresh fruit, seeds and spices into the blender, this includes: 1 mandarin orange, 1 stalk of celery, 2 tbsp ground flax, 2 shakes of Turmeric, and 1 crack of black pepper. Blend well. 
  3. Through the small hole at the top of your blender, slowly put your frozen fruit into your blender while the blender is on. Continue adding frozen fruit until your smoothie has reached your desired texture. 

PLAY WITH THIS RECIPE. Optional additions include: Peanut butter, yogurt, apple sauce, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, apples, peaches, pineapple, strawberry, banana, beets, avocado, or just about any other fruit/veggie/nut/seed that can be eaten raw! 

*Those who suffer from thyroid imbalance (hypo-/hyper-thyroid) should not use Soy milk, instead opt for unsweetened almond milk.

**Those who suffer from thyroid imbalance (hypo-/hyper-thyroid) should not eat raw kale, instead opt for spinach.
